In commemoration of ‘Fathers’ Day’ event last 20 June 2018, I joined a Prostate seminar, with free consultation, urinalysis and Digital Rectal Examination (DRE) under the banner of ‘Tayo NaMan’ held at Mt. Carmel hospital in Lucena city. The event was sponsored by the Philippine Urological Society of the Philippines (PUSP). In this event, the Urologist who performed DRE to me has confirmed that my prostate is enlarged. Photo

Calm, I accepted the recent finding of having an enlarged prostate as normal. Don’t get me wrong; my 10 years of farm life, in faith (daily conversing/praying to God to spare me from this imagined illness) became my turning point to yield my future to Him no matter what and it has taught me to be content in whatever state I am.

On the other hand, my ever-caring wife Mary Ann, upon learning it, became worried. That’s when this new episode of enlarged prostate disturbed our usual farm activities and our savings!

Through my wife’s insinuation, we pay a visit to Dr. J. Balingit for second opinion, again. He is the Urologist at SLMC, who performed my first Biopsy in August 2012 that resulted to benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). What is Prostate Biopsy? It’s a procedure where a needle is inserted into the prostate to take tissue out to check for prostate cancer. This is usually done through the rectum.

Dr. Balingit, after reviewing my previous/present prostate history, suggested that I have to undergo MRI to determine if there’s an invasive or harmless marauder in my prostate.

What is MRI? MRI is Magnetic Resonance Imaging. This is a machine with a powerful magnetic field, radio waves and a computer to produce detailed picture of the structures within a man’s prostate gland. It can help to diagnose infection, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostate cancer or congenital abnormalities.

On 31 July 2018, I underwent a MRI procedure. The result: ‘Two high suspicious lesions, right posterior at the apex. And the overall is PI-RADS category 4: High (clinically significant cancer is likely to be present).

Our follow-up visit to Dr. J. Balingit covers a long and healthy conversation about my predicament (dilemma, tight spot). Concerned, he recommended me to undergo another Trus biopsy and cysto-turp procedures. My wife without hesitancy requested him for a referral to St. Luke’s Medical Center Social Service.

OMG, I’m really into for a major bumpy medical trip!

In my family, deteriorating health news of a member is kept in confidence. This time, it didn’t work out smoothly. My eldest brother and his wife start to investigate my situation. Kuya Celest is the guru of our family from the time our dad passed away. He is gentle, genuine, responsible and compassionate. His cheery wife, ate Ruby always find ways to communicate. Their willingness to help (no matter what) and positive motivations to face fearlessly the likely prostate cancer made my wife and I to march forward dedicatedly.

On 13 Aug. 2018, my medical journey at St Luke’s Medical Center Social Service has begun. It’s a journey involving several trips from the province to metro, fulfilling requirements, medication, clinical tests and many more at times skipping meals and leaving/returning from/to our residence prior sunrise and after midnight. Through the journey, backed up by my eldest brother and his wife by all means, we have the privilege of meeting more ‘angels’ – the gifts in the journey! Aside from our family members, the new angels are from the personnel/physicians of SLMC SS, and people we meet in the hospital.

The planning stages for trus biopsy and cysto-turp started separately, one after the other. Urologist, Dr. Rogerson Tiangco handles my agenda thoroughly from day one to the end, in coordination with the Uro-team.

On 27 Sept. 2018, I underwent biopsy in SLMC. Dr. Jan Michael Silang Cruz performed the biopsy. After 3 hours of rest, I was allowed to go home with prescriptions and recommendations to take and follow strictly. On 04 Oct. 2018, Dr. Tiangco informed us that the result of biopsy is benign. What a relief for Mary Ann and I; we celebrated joyfully in prayers with gratitude to God’s mercy.

During my medical journey a tragic event streamed in unexpectedly. Re-planning for my cysto-turp procedure has to be renewed. On 18 Oct. 2018, my mom-in-law was admitted in SLMC for enlarged heart and water in the lungs. My wife has to leave the farm the next day to join my mom-in-law in the hospital. On 24 Oct. 2018, 4am, Mary Ann left the hospital to return home to pick up something for my mom-in-law. Around 9:15am, on board the provincial bus for home, she receives a txt message from her daughter Karen that Inay has died. My wife was in tears upon arrival at home; uncontrollably, we both cried. Momentarily relieved and while collecting the things she needed, my wife handed to me some notes from Inay Letty about the unbearable pain she’s experiencing during the treatment. Inay has pleaded to end the treatment so that she can die peacefully. My wife & I have discussed our plans and activities before she left. At 1pm, I accompanied my wife at the gate for her return trip to metro for my deceased mom-in-law.

On 27 Oct. 2018, I joined my wife in San Pablo City, St Augustine church, Divine Mercy chapel where Inay’s remains was placed. On 30 Oct. 2018, Inay’s remain was buried in her hometown cemetery.

My cysto-turp planning resumes on 06 Nov. 2018. On 12 Nov. 2018, mid-afternoon, I was admitted in SLMC SS PWD/senior citizen ward for the procedure. Dr. Tiangco assisted me closely through the admission process.

By morning of 13 Nov. 2018, I had my 1st cysto-turp surgery executed by Dr. Jan Michael Silang-Cruz with the Uro-team. The physicians, nurses and personnel in the SS are exemplary in the performance of their duties. Hence, my 3-days recovery period in the ward is quick and a good experience to remember. On 17 Nov. 2018, Mary Ann & I check out from SLMC SS ward. We’re sincerely grateful to the Team of Urologists who assisted us in checking out and bidding us farewell, after a brief photo session.

I hope this blog will give a record of perspective, context and consequences that can help us make wise choices in any predicament we may face.

To God be the glory.
